But I expected something entirely else when reading the blurb ... because the plot twists where just a bit heavy and nearly genre-changing in my opinion. Sadly, I think many of the things weren't explained profoundly and after reading half of the book the rest until the end felt rushed while the first half was dull at times. In comparison to other recently read books I think a solid 3 will do. It's not bad but it's just no favourite either.

The prose is good, with some of Roth’s apt descriptions that I really appreciate - but it doesn’t hold a candle to Poster Girl in this regard.
The protagonist has some good development, but she’s a bit annoying. Some of the other characters develop, but others are flat.
There are some great elements to the magical world, complete with a few really rich details that flesh it out, help you suspend disbelief, and delight the imagination.
The overall plot felt a little incomplete, especially toward the end. Some of the plot twists felt a bit shaky and didn’t have quite enough rationale. In particular,
Finally, I didn’t think the

This is a novel I would consider more New adult than actually adult, the themes were intense but didn’t go in depth as much as I’m used to in adult material. The romance was a nice subplot and I was very invested in Sloane’s struggle.
The ending wrapped up so quickly I wouldn’t be able to call it perfect. However, the themes Roth was interested in were very much used well for the plot she achieved. And I really love the character work in this, almost everyone felt fleshed out. I just wish I could have had more time with it, that there was more of it! Which is an awesome sign for a book- I recommend it.

I did guess the character-based plot twists (I felt they were pretty obvious) but not the worldbuilding-based ones.

Chosen Ones forces the reader to view the familiar trope in a new light, exploring the trauma and aftermath of being, in essence, groomed to fight an evil. The combination of a flawed, complicated antihero, realistic depictions of how different people cope with trauma, an engaging plot, and the well paced snippets of backstory in the format of reports and articles made this a difficult to put down, thouroughly immersive read.
