I was given this book for my honest review….

In the first book we get a look into this wonderful world that S.M Blooding has created. We get to see the history of the Great Families and The Hands also learn about the “marks” that some of the people have. In this book we get to see how Synn and the others are working to shape their future.

This book had a more political aspect to it than the last. That aspect added more to it. S.M Blooding does a wonderful job at creating a beautiful world. She is very good at describing it so you can easily imagine how everything would look. The “games” introduced us to some less populated tribes and some interesting character along with adding some great action scenes and friendly/ not so friendly competition between the different families and the hands.

Synn has grown so strong but is someone still pulling his strings in order to control his powerful mark? He’s still fighting his bond with Nix and he has his mother who is a leader in a Powerful family plus now there is the Queen of Swords and the Priestess. I like the priestess character and am excited to read more about her.I love that Synn is determined to make the world fair and just without seeking revenge and that he wants to put the best people in power to help lead the families.

I love reading about the bonds Synn has with his family and I enjoyed trying to figure out where he was going to be in all this? Was he going to accept Nix’s offer to be her Knight? Was he going to take over his fathers ship? or become leader of the League of Cities?

This book has great action, humor scenes and some twists that you don’t see coming. The ending I was shocked! My husband said just by looking at my face you and the sharp intake of breath something major happened.

This series is a great Steampunk, action filled book. I’m looking forward to the next one! I’d recommend it to anyone who likes shows like The Avatar and anyone who likes Steampunk reads. The Devices of War is a great series!

The world is still amazing, the writing brilliant, and my issues with the main character have softened slightly as he's become a bit more self aware.

From the sneak peek at the next book, I suspect he regresses though, which will be annoying, because conflict due to being an arsehat is less interesting than working out how to manage yourself and interactions with other people.

I recommend this series for the world building and depth of character creation.

And if the author reads this review, you need a better editor, there were a few typos and awkward language use in parts of the ebook.
