I wanted to know more of the Eternals' background and so checked out as many books as the library had. Although I appreciate Jack Kirby's imagination and artistic story-telling, and know he is responsible for some of my favorite characters, I just *can't stand reading 99% of the comic book scripts from this era.*

This was such an oddly curated collection. The stories that were chosen were only there in part so much so that we never really got to know any characters at all? There’s a little backstory in here, but it’s not a particularly fulfilling read. I suppose it’s a taste of the story, but there’s not enough content provided to really chew on.

The end has entries from Avengers stories from the early 90s and that was the most interesting - really because we got more concrete motives and feelings from Ikaris and Sersi.

Unfortunately this also doesn’t show an appearance from all of the Eternals which was disappointing because the cover shows all of them. I was sad especially that Thena was not present.

All in all, this was just odd and disjointed.

Mostly stuff that has been collected elsewhere plus a couple of random stories that don't make a lot of sense out of context. There are better places to start.

If you have been following my socials since January, I have been obsessing over Marvel Studios' Eternals and been getting myself into the comic book side of this world. It has been interesting in getting know the characters I know from the MCU to getting to know their comic book versions. While this was only a short introduction into this world, I have plenty more to delve into.

There was enough to enjoy about this book to increase my interest in the series, and the art really is gorgeous in a way that modern comics can't figure out how to replicate. Still, the story loses some element to really keep pulling you back in, and it might be because of the characters. They are remarkably flat.

If this is as good as this body of comics gets, I'm somewhat worried. The pieces are here to build a fascinating science fiction/superhero mixture. I don't have much confidence in it actually getting to the point where it fulfills that potential.
