Sarah Marshall suggested that ghost stories shouldn’t be tales of horror, but stories that are sad. I think that is why I am drawn to ghost-stories. They can be a way for us to think about death in ways that can be sad but also playful.
I love a ghost story, and I had a good time with the first two books in the series. However, when I realized this book was set in New Orleans I got nervous. There is no shortage of horrible deaths in Scotland and Paris; all deaths are horrible in their way, but New Orleans is quite literally closer to home. In grade school, my class had a bake sale for victims of Hurricane Katrina. We shouldn’t think about the history of life in America and particularly the south without considering the history of slavery. I appreciated that Schwab didn’t shy away these entirely. Being a children’s book about ghost-hunting, it wasn’t going to be an in depth conversation, but I think it could have easily been looked over, and it wasn’t.
The stakes of the first two books were pretty high, so there’s a nice escalation here, as well as a wrap-up that feels satisfying even though it’s not tied up in a perfect bow. I love the premise of Jacob’s character, and I could have gotten a bit more clarity about what was going on there, but overall I was pretty happy with this text. This is not a particularly profound read, but it was enjoyable, lightly spooky, with good morals on death and friendship.

This series has absolutely helped me get back into reading again. Every time I was stuck in a reading dip of not being able to really read a book or pick one up, one of the books of this series has helped me get back into reading again. It's such an incredibly easy, yet exciting and gripping read. I love Cassidy and her parents and how every book is situated in a different city, all of them which I absolutely love and want to visit badly. It's only made me want to visit these cities even more and get to know more about the history (and their ghosts).
