Czyż nie do władcy więc państwo należy?

Welcome to the beginning of another slew of books I have to read for class: University of St. Andrews edition!

This version of Sophocles’s Antigone translated by Anne Carson is the last play in the Oedipus Cycle that follows the progeny of Oedipus, Antigone and Ismene, after one of their brothers has been denied a proper burial. I don’t want to go into too much detail given how short this play is, but I will say that I enjoyed it. This translation has pretty prose if you read it out loud, and though there isn’t much plot that actually happens on stage, I didn’t really mind. It was solid and I understand why it’s a classic still taught thousands of years after being written.

There is no happiness where there is no wisdom;
No wisdom but in submission to the gods.
Big words are always punished,
And proud men in old age learn to be wise.
