Another male lead who is not particularly likeable. The only thing that would compel the female lead to love him is the mystery of his character given how they meet, but once she knows him better he seems like a worse person, until his complete character reversal at the end - he changes from a typically misogynistic man of the time, to a modern liberal and understanding day of today + hero of the story, and it’s quite unbelievable.
The storyline is based initially on Cinderella, which is actually fine - it’s adapted with enough point of difference to feel fresh and interesting, however the choice of that option feels rather lazy.

Book Benedict is a DICK. Yes, let's save a maid from being raped only to force her to become his maid in hopes of forcing her to get with him.

I didn’t like the beginning as it seemed very like Cinderella and the evil stepmother but I really got into the storyline after chapter 2. Loved the ending of it. My favourite book of the series, so far anyway!

What I'm learning about Julia Quinn's Bridgerton novels is that she likes to ruin perfectly appealing romances with people acting like abusive dickheads. There's a lot to like about this book as long as you can ignore the couple of scenes about halfway through where Benedict gets to be this round's abusive dickhead.

MOST of the book is very sweet, with the star-crossed lovers from different social spheres falling for eachother, and for the first half, I was 100% Team Benedict and Sophie. Then Benedict asks Sophie to be his mistress, gets very reasonably rejected, and starts blackmailing Sophie to keep her in his life. It gets better, and Quinn at least has him realise he was a dickhead by the end, but man, this could have been a five star for me if it just weren't there in the first place.

I await season 4 of the TV show with bated breath and sincerely hope they leave out the parts of the story that make you hate Benedict.

So, you know, is Benedict toxic? Probably. Yes, definitely. Did I still enjoy this? Yes, yes I did.

The Cinderella retelling aspect was fun, and just like all the Bridgerton novels, Quinn makes me laugh out loud and charms me.

This one was slower going, but I think it’s the fault of my general reading slump. They’re not groundbreaking stories by any means, but they’ve been a nice little escape.

If you are not used to early 2000s historical romances, or if you’re expecting the show, I recommend you adjust your thoughts going in.
