The thing that authors really need to get right when writing enemies-to-lovers is the transition from enemy to lover—it needs to be made clear to the reader why, exactly, they fall in love with each other. But here, the author fails completely. There is no transition, there’s just Shazi hating Khalid to her saying she wants to kiss him and is in love with him (I’m not tagging a spoiler here because it’s the whole premise of the book). There’s literally zero explanation as to why she has suddenly become enamoured with Khalid. I really like the general idea of the book, especially as a 1001 Nights rewrite, but the relationship aspect falls flat without the journey of actually falling in love with someone who is supposedly evil. Had the author included a more transitionary period with their relationship I probably would have rated this much higher, but I couldn’t stand Shazi constantly waxing poetic about a man she hardly knew anything about.

I got this book because I loved RA's The Beautiful series (or at least what has been released thus far).

I enjoyed this book and don't have anything bad to say about it, but there wasn't much that stuck out to me either. There wasn't much umph, but it was a good, quick read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

This is very fun, and I'm excited to read the second book in the series. Shahrzad is strong and conflicted, and the story does a really interesting process of unfolding.

I recommend this for anyone looking for:
- Enemies to lovers
- A good dose of angst
- Middle-Eastern fantasy
- A sassy protagonist done well

I wish I liked this a little more than I did. I grew to like the romance (me? like romance? who am i becoming??) and overall enjoyed my time. There was a lot of other stuff going on that I didn't really find engaging, but Shahrzad and Khalid's story was pretty compelling. My biggest gripe was with the writing style, but I think a large part of it is probably personal preference. I generally don't like too much description especially of the setting and the author has this weird fixation on describing eyes and their colour repeatedly throughout.

I think in general the book really picks up a bit over a third of the way through and it's pretty quick to get through. Some of the aspects I was more hesitant about, I came around to by the end. I will say that the very end of the book was a little messy and maybe even a tad rushed, but oh well. Not a favourite, but I'm at least considering reading the sequel
