I really loved this!! Felix was such a great mc and I loved getting to see his growth throughout the story! I really enjoyed how messy he was, it felt really authentic to being a teenager and questioning your identity. My heart broke when he saw the pictures and his deadname plastered all over the school and when he was being harassed on Instagram! I think the only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars is that I could’ve done without the Declan storyline and I didn’t feel like the love triangle was necessary 🤷🏻‍♀️ besides that though, I loved it and I’m so glad I finally picked it up! 🧡

I read this on audio and I don’t know if that was the right idea. The reason why is because at times Felix reminded me of Holden from the Catcher in the Rye. As someone who is not part of the LGBTQ community but I am an ally, this was incredibly informative. Kacen Callender is an incredible writer and he was able to show the difficulties LGBTQ teens go through on a day to day basis.

I love that I read a book whose title included the words “once upon” and then immediately read a book with a title including the words “ever after.” I just think it’s neat. Felix is a trans high schooler trying to find love and focus on his summer art portfolio for his elite high school. But Felix is being harassed online and in school by an anonymous fellow student at his school. Determined to figure out who’s behind it and get revenge, Felix is blind to the love that surrounds him. This book was so wonderful. I read the first 50 pages and then the next day I read the rest of it in one go. I could not put it down. The end was so healing and wonderful.

I’m sure when I was younger this book with its representation could have been a game changer. I think for me the whole plot of enemies to lovers but not really and like, catfishing, really wasn’t for me, and it mostly felt predictable. I’ve never read a book with a character who’s a demiboy and this gender journey of course is really important. The ending wrapped up quite quickly, and was hopeful. I think I was a bit bored because the mystery element wasn’t a mystery really but it was an easy enough read to finish. I’m learning perhaps  YA romance books actually aren’t for me?!

Overall, I enjoyed parts of the book and, while the characters annoyed me, I did still appreciate the craft and the journey and the occasional emotional connection.
