I always enjoy Karen White's books and this book was no exception. This book had a lot of different aspects to it - love & loss, family matters, new places & homes, and even some mystery and intrigue. It was very easy for me to get to know the characters in the story and could quickly and easily put myself in the same setting and picture the beautiful surroundings of South Carolina. The overall story line was fairly predictable for me, but I did appreciate the piece of family mystery which was tied in and created a little more surprise in the story.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for this review.

This book was like an onion....each chapter peeled off another layer. The characters were very real and I grew to love them as the book went on. Perfect summer read.

Karen White is a great storyteller if you’re into melodramatic family sagas with a touch of lifetime movie romance. I enjoyed the overall story but it could have been about 200 pages shorter

Gentle, heartwarming, and heartbreaking altogether. I absolutely love Lauralee. Her character was lovely - not the typical Southern Belle young stepmother in most stories, but one of depth, wisdom and unselfishness.

The threads of domestic violence and working out the shame associated with it was told well and sensitively, with the women on the receiving end, realistic and relatable. I loved the friendship and courage both Lauralee and Gibbs lent Merritt and all of their characters’ development. While it wasn’t unpredictable, it unfolded in a really great way.

The mystery part of it was really great too - much of that was actually unpredictable, at least initially. Also, the narrators in the audio were fantastic. Really enjoyed it.

Told in two voices (occasionally a third), this is the story of Merrit, her step-mother Loralee, and younger brother Owen who are trying to find an equilibrium while living together in a house with mysteries. I quite enjoyed this book, although it was a bit heart-wrenching.

Thanks Netgalley for a copy to read and review!

I'm sorry but this book blew me away. I have tears.... I recently put my life on hold because my father passed with cancer. Every cancer it seems in the end when it spreads and has no real foundation besides blood. My truth is nothing lasts forever and you only have today. Two real quotes I have tattooed on my arms. This book was a mind bender. In a moment where I am lost. You are stronger than you think. I have endured so much in the last few years that this is my next tattoo. I willfully bow down to Karen White as a beautiful author. I seek Charleston as a way of escape as only a southerner does. Five stars of beautiful entertainment. Magnificent book.
