Whelp, this book is better than the last one, so there's that at least.  But I really don't know what to make of it.

Artemis Fowl's mental health has taken a nose-dive, coming down with the Atlantis Complex, a psychological disorder that seems to be a mix of paranoid schizophrenia, OCD, and DID. It is a well-known psychological disorder that affects fairy criminals that are suffering a lot of guilt.  The villain is, thankfully, not who I was expecting it to be (which means that she'll probably be the villain for the final book, siiiggghhhh), and he had the potential to be an interesting and nuanced villain except for the whole
brainwashing his wife thing, which makes his motives of trying to save her life less sympathetic and more "well, at least if she dies she'll be escaping this man who's held her in thrall for the last 80 years."

I'm excited for the next book, both because I'm genuinely looking forward to it after a friend of mine assured me that the ending is worth the mediocre books (I hope her opinion wasn't clouded by nostalgia goggles), and because I've been reading this series for like, two years now and I am so glad to have it done with.
