This was a good little bit of background and character growth for Draper, one of my favorite characters. It was quick and fun. Really humanizes the Martians.

You don’t need to read this to keep up with the major books, but it does provide insight into the rest of the books.

Going into this novella I was pretty excited to read more about Bobbie. She had been such a kick-ass character int he previous book of the Expanse series and I was interested to learn some of her background. Unfortunately the booklet me down a little because it dealt more with her cousin (who is not in the Expanse novels) and less with Bobbie herself. She actually had quite a small role in this story and was more of a supporting character. So while I greatly appreciated this novella, it was not what I was hoping for.

Oh and as a p.s., I was a little bothered by the title of the book, Gods of Risk as it barely applied to the story, except for something that was mentioned in passing.

Interesting character snippet, but lacking the things I've enjoyed most about the Expanse series.

Edited after listening to the audio: This is the first Expanse audiobook I've listened to that was narrated by Erik Davies (alternately, by someone other than Jefferson Mays). I was a bit dubious, as I've really enjoyed Mays' narration, but Davies does a fine job. It probably helps that this snippet only features one major character from the larger books, though her family features a bit in them later on, but I think Davies would do all right on the main books as well. There's a similar quality to his voice. I would guess that whoever did the voice selection was looking for that quality.

The story is still pretty "meh" for me. I mostly enjoyed seeing how Bobby interacted with the situation, and that was fairly minimal. Good as a time filler while waiting for the next book, but not a must-read (or listen).

I didn't care for this too much. It was a run-of-the-mill story. I didn't feel like it added anything and I didn't like the characters at all. Except Bobbie, obviously, she's amazing.

2.5. A fine way to spend a long car ride, but i don’t see the point of this story and the main character was angsty
