While not quite as engaging as WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN? this is another well-written, suspenseful thriller, this time centered around a kidnapping, but of course it's more complicated that just that. Clark's genius really lies in how REAL her characters and their worlds seem. She absolutely nails their internal lives, and makes the reader genuinely care about what happens with them. I also noticed that she uses the trick Lee Child and David Morrell use frequently with the use of short chapters, which helps increase the tension and make the reader think, "I'll just read one more."

I knocked off a star just because it wasn't quite as thrilling as WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN?, but it's probably closer to a 4.5

Continuing my re-read of books and authors that first got me into thrillers back in the day. I really enjoyed this one! I found her first mystery to be enjoyable but predictable, though it might not have been so much at the time it was written. This was a straight suspense thriller, not really a mystery at all, and I think it really holds up. Would recommend this to fans of modern thrillers, it hardly felt dated at all and it was an exciting read.
