This was one of the semi finalists for SPFBOI 2020 for the Fantasy Hive, so at the end of the review I'll copy the link to the full SPFBO review!

It is by no means perfect, but it is a very easy and quick read and I breezed through it anyway. So I'll go with 3,5*

I really liked this book after a bit of a wobbly start. The first chapter was rather weird, and after the strange cover and some illustrations before I even made it to the text I wasn't expecting much. Quickly after though, it managed to pick up speed and I found myself hooked. It starts with the premise of an UF that has Inuit culture and an actual god as it's center, but be aware, it quickly sverves away from that, and that definitely left me a bit dissappointed, as it didn't deliever on my expectations. Instead it turnes toward more of a crime/drama feel that more or less plays out in one small US village. Especially the end lacked the expected closure, and could have been handled a lot better.

I liked the characters enought to care for them, even if they definitely could have had a bit more depth and a little less stereotypes used. They weren't bad, just a bit too predictable, and especially the main character lacked agency and was just swept around by what happened to him.

Despite the flaws and very little magic I did still quite ejoy the book, and hated having to take a break from reading for any reason, and most of that is due to the easy prose and tone that just pulled me along nicely.

This story is a mystery story with a spiritual take on it - I highly enjoyed the comparison between the indigenous and small-town Wisconsin communities, as well as the take on indigenous spiritual beliefs. A fast-paced story about abuse, pain, and truth that is absolutely captivating. Highly recommend!
