Didn't know anything about one of the main characters except they were perverted.

A wonderfully written steam punk romp. Engaging from start to finish. Cannot wait to read the rest.

Honestly, the story is really interesting and it's a great steampunk version of London. However nearly all of the characters are utterly unlikeable and most of the book is just English gentlemen having discussions. Throw in some casual classim and sexism (all female characters are either dumb or there to be hot or convenient), and a lot of plot convenience, and that's the book. It does get a bit of leeway for being a first publication of the author.

No - just ... no - I wanted and tried and kept going - this to me was force feeding myself a novel filled with characters I did not care about and enemies that were not believable or reasonable to be bad guys - I mean, at some point, I have to give up on this, and it happened when i was almost half way through - I will close this book, never to be opened again, and not lose any sleep for whatever happens to anyone in this book - ever - I am sorry, I know that this is supposed to be an enjoyable affair, but it truly is some of the most boring modern writing that I have read in quite some time.

This was the first steam punk novel I tried and I thought it was very interesting, very well done. The story is complex without being too hard to follow and it is well written. I will surely try the next one of the series.

While I never had problems getting through this book, I also never came to the conclusion that it was brilliant. It seemed to teeter between the absurd and the realistic and ultimately never found which one of the two it was anchored in. Some parts seemed historic and interesting while others seemed to lose the plot and thereafter resumed the absurd and corny. Maybe I haven’t read enough in the “Steampunk” tradition, but I was left with the feeling that this book wasn’t familiar with that tradition either. All in all, just okay.

3.5 stars out of 5.

This was a good book but just too long and dense. The first half is 4.5 out of 5 while the last half is less. Still, great steampunk novel featuring real historical figures in an alternate future.
