It's not enough to be a music enthusiast; you must be completely obsessive about music to enjoy this book. It takes a DEEP dive into what makes music such a cultural phenomena against the backdrop of a tortured will-they-won't-they love story.

It's pretty clear Joe and Percy aren't a compatible fit, to say the least, but it doesn't stop them from exploring their connection through ill-advised romance and songwriting throughout the book. I LOVE books that focus on exploring the creative process of two people working together—in this case, one musician and one opinionated critic—but the book spent most of its time showcasing how much time they spent away from each other rather than working together.

It's odd in that as a reader, you aren't necessarily rooting for them to be together, but you are rooting for them to become creative partners again. Both seem to have what the other person wants, and this tension makes for an interesting book. It's quite slow and meandering at times, but it kept bringing me back into the music-obsessed madness.

This was comped with Tomorrow x3 (my favorite book in recent history), Normal People, and The Rachel Incident—a high bar! I had higher expectations going into this for that reason, and it mostly met them... in a way. I found the two MCs to be a bit insufferable at times, but Zoe—the third friend in the mix—helped to restore balance from time to time. All in all, a great debut!

it took me so long to get into this book but once I did, I felt like I really understood her and was rooting for her. the tension between her and Joe was felt too
