I tried but found the over-analyzing of music to be too tedious to continue.

I picked up this book quite randomly and I'm absolutely in love with it!
I wish my 16 year old self could've read this because she would've been OBSESSED. Percy is SO COOL, she is a lyrical genius, has a cool ass music blog and works at a trendsetter company, and she still isn't pretentious. A marvellous coming of age, which feels complex and well-rounded. We follow Percy throughout 8 years of her life, from her writing course at Berkeley in 2000 to the financial crisis of 2008, and I find it really impressive that despite the long time span the book does not miss a beat - we get enough space in order to witness authentic and meaningful character development and it just does not get boring.
The love story brings another layer to Percy's story but she has a life of her own as well, which does not always revolve around romance, which I really appreciate. The dynamic between characters never feels hollow and is wonderfully embedded in music. Which this book is all about! You learn so much about music and lyrics, it was amazing to read along while listening to the book's playlist.

As a fellow millennial music nerd, this book spoke to me in a way that I thought she'd creeped my livejournal. It made me laugh, kick my feet and nod probably too emphatically.

Four stars only because I would have loved a bit of a stronger finish but overall a top read of the year for me!

This is A24’s type on paper.

I was expecting this to be more like Daisy Jones and instead this read a bit more Cleopatra and Frankenstein in its literary structure, but a very speedy read which was just what I needed. I did listen to the songs that they talked about as I read the chapters and that was SO fun, especially the Summer in New York montage with Sam Cooke playing.

I will be sat when this comes to the cinema, especially to see my gal Saoirse, as I think watching this will translate better for me (ie punch me in the gut)
