Where to start? This book came up on my radar after it won a few acclaimed awards and the Goodreads Historical Fiction Novel of the Year 2016. I thought I'd give it a whirl - I mean, it had to be good if it won so many awards and Historical Fiction Novel of the Year, right?

Wrong.

There were several irredeemable flaws with the novel;
1. The characters lacked any depth or emotion. It made it hard to be dragged into a tragic story when the characters lacked any personality.
2. At points it was difficult to ascertain what was even happening in the plot. I'd find myself re-reading passages over and over trying to figure it out what was actually occurring.
3. It felt like is was a clinical recount of a tragic period in history. It was like picking up a textbook.

I can't understand how this novel has gained so much critical acclaim. Perhaps because Obama and Oprah recommended it?

I've read many reviews to see what others thought. It seems there's a lot of mixed reviews revolving this book as well as a bit of tension. I've seen reviewers saying that if you didn't think this book was 5/5 it is probably due to your "white privilege". Basically saying, "if you don't love this book, you don't care about the suffering of slaves because you're a racist". It's a weird form of liberal blackmail.

I care about the tragedy and suffering. I don't care about this hack job of a book though.

I listened to this through libby and I just couldn't follow along that well. I did finish it but I didn't retain much.
