The Gatekeeper's Sons by Eva Pohler

I am always looking for decent young adult fiction and this would fit that category. At first I thought it was just introducing Greek mythology as a variation on the "super-attractive guy falls for plain-ish girl" story line, but as the novel progressed so did the inclusion of the mythological characters and history. I appreciated that. The content itself and way the relationship between the Than and Therese developes makes this more appropriate for a maturer high school audience. This would maybe work best for young ladies who outgrew Percy Jackson but still enjoy the genre.

For lack of better words or terms, this book was okay. I didn't thoroughly enjoy it to where I can say I loved it. It just didn't connect with me like I was hoping for. I did however, love the way Pohler wrote. Her style of writing is simple yet beautiful. Definitely an easy read. I just feel that the book as a whole is a bit lacking.

Therese is a fifteen year old. Now, normally I don't read books with main characters who are younger than sixteen or seventeen. I mainly do that because I feel like fourteen and fifteen year olds are still lacking the maturity that you grow into while in high school. But I picked this up because it sounded so awesome. When in her dream state, she became a little loose, by just kissing these random guys. I don't know, maybe it's just me. Other than that, I really liked Therese. Plus, she's a redhead. I love redheaded main characters. There aren't enough!

Now, onto Thanatos (Than) and Hypnos (Hip). There were times where I loved them, but those times were few and far between. They were lacking as Gods. I didn't quite get that God-like persona from then. I found myself a little bored while reading about them. And that's just a no-no when it comes to hot, sexy boys.

I know, it sounds like I'm saying a lot of negative stuff about this book. I'm not saying it's bad. There are lots and lots of really good reviews about this book. It just didn't live up to my expectations with the Greek mythology. Maybe if I hadn't just read two 5-star books about Greek mythology. Those 2 books could be clouding my judgment with this book.

Even though I didn't connect a whole lot with this book, I'm still going to give this series a shot. Maybe after I give mythology a break. But I do recommend this book to mythology beginners and actual young adults.

Need more of this series!!

I love this book. I wish I heard about it sooner! I love Greek mythology, and read as many fantasy books that involve Greek mythology, it's always so interesting. I learn so many new things, and never get tried of it. The last one I read was Hades getting married to someone new instead of being married to Persephone.

Good and quick

Couldn’t put this book down but didn’t want to finish it too fast. Absolutely easy and fun read. Loved the story line

Unfortunately I could not finish this book. I tried and tried. I just kept drifting off and getting bored. I can’t pinpoint exactly why though. I felt like I had read the story before, but this was a very less interesting version? It was odd. I rarely can’t finish a book.

"The most common way people give up their power is by believing they have none.”

This book was such an emotional roller coaster!
The mystery surrounding Therese's parents deaths had me hooked through out, and I loved reading about the different Greek Mythologies! I thought it was great that the author also included a variety of different Greek gods/goddesses (such as the Furies), rather then simply sticking to the main Olympians.

Therese was by my far my favourite character! I loved how compassionate she was towards animals, and her lucid dreams were so much fun to read about.

I'd recommend this book to ya fans and younger readers

I'm a sucker for Greek mythology, and loved the interaction with the gods and the quests. But this still suffers from the YA plague - main female character that is special yet feels she is too plain, main male character falls for her, and we keep being reminded over and over how gorgeous he is.

This is a great book for lovers of mythology. I always enjoy a well written story that brings the old gods and goddesses of any mythology back to life in modern times. Eva Pohler held true to the mythology of the Greek gods and goddesses through the story, which was an added bonus as well. Thanatos is the god of death, he guides the souls to the ferryman to ensure they enter his father's Underworld. While he may not be happy, he is at least content and understanding of how important his duty is. Until Therese's spitit visits him while she is in a coma after a tragic car accident takes the lives of her parents (which is an amazing little mystery/sidestory that helps to tie it all together perfectly). He is fascinated by this mortal who shows no fear of him. He is determined to make her his queen, but he does not want to follow in the path of his father, Hades, and use trickery. Instead he appears on the mortal plane ready to win her over. But some of the gods disagree with his choice and are set to stop him, while others think it's just grand and will do anything to help them out. - See more at: http://hotofftheshelves.blogspot.com/2013/07/book-tour-and-giveaway-gatekeepers-sons.html#sthash.4VW17nWP.dpuf

Good quick read

It was good to read some paranormal something with a fresh twist. I read it in a day, and while it wasn't something that I read from start to finish without setting down, it was a good diversion from reality.

I can see why I loved this book when I was younger, but it is a little different reading it when I’m a little older. I liked the new perspective on Greek mythology, especially Thanatos who is a less seen god. I also appreciated the backdrop of the mystery. Part of me felt like the love story overtook the mourning, causing the MC to feel a little flat. Overall, this is a fun, clean read and I will probably read the rest of the series
