I really was not motivated to continue this book until over halfway through. I thought
Aria and Steph were just going to get together normally and not as an affair, which was a welcome twist. Once Aria was more comfortable in her queerness, I also found her less insufferable. Hailey’s and Tasha’s relationship was also unexpected for me but I think it added to the story. Joan’s death at the end was completely unexpected for me. But I love how Aria ended up pursuing art eventually in addition to her education
If the first half of the book matched the second half, I would’ve rated it higher.

Liked it a bit better than the first one, maybe since I related to its setting more? Solid read either way.

Characters felt real and complicated. Loved Joan, the grandmother.
Ending felt very sudden and dramatic and I wish more time was taken to resolve the story

I really enjoyed this! It definitely has the same coming-of-age energy that Last Night at the Telegraph Club has, but I liked the focus on art and also on friendships! Platonic bonds can really make a book so much better to me.
The familial bonds in this book were BEAUTIFUL!!!! I did enjoy the romance plots as well, just slightly less.
And the ending felt a little rushed but overall high quality book.
Malinda Lo could write anything and I would read it, her writing style makes my brain happy.
I wish that Lily and Kath had come up sooner in the book, I think it would have made for a very cool addition to when Aria is just figuring things out.
Also, the last part of the book was sadder than I was expecting! But it still came together nicely.
Can’t believe the epilogue didn’t tell us who Tasha got engaged to, I want to knowwww :)
