I loved this book. Each character's story was special and unique. I liked all 3 characters and was driven to find out what happened to them. The author said a lot of profound things in this book I won't quickly forget. Some swear words (boo), but not many, but does include the F word. Has adult themes of abuse, suicide, etc.

I'm not a huge fantasy reader, but I do enjoy books that fall into the 'magical realism' genre. This book fits well into that category, but it has some romance, mystery, and historical fiction elements as well. It's mostly set in Dublin and told from the perspective of three characters and between two time periods. Opaline, who escapes her strict family and their traditional expectations to run a special bookshop in the 1920s, and Martha and Henry who are living in the present day. Martha has recently left a toxic marriage for a fresh start as a housekeeper for an elderly former actress, and Henry is an academic researcher who is trying to find a lost manuscript in a bookshop that doesn’t seem to exist. These three characters start out lost in their own ways but discover that they are all interconnected, and their stories are just beginning.

I switched between the audiobook and physical book formats for this and I definitely preferred the audiobook. I loved how there were three different narrators rather than one who tries to change their voice for each character. The perspective changing kept me interested and invested. I also really enjoyed the themes around becoming the main character of your life, strong and resilient women, and of course a love of books and stories.

I liked this book more than anything I have read in quite awhile. The story was creative, mysterious, contemplative, and page-turning, all at the same time. I didn't love the ending, but I definitely loved the book as a whole.

Needed way more cohesiveness - it felt like it was trying too hard to be mysterious with things when the mystery was really not very deep imo. I did like the atmosphere and the historical timeline with Opaline. If I have nothing nice to say about Henry then I will say nothing at all.
