Reading Unmasking Autism in the midst of undergoing autism assessment means everything to me. It was informative and written without the usual gatekeeping style of jargon-filled academic writing--meaning plain, clear, and accessibly. It helped me understand certain autistic traits and experiences that pertain to and resonate with me. It also helped me see the diversity within the community itself, which made me excited, feel belonging, and deepen the empathy I feel for other neurodiverse people. Other than giving me names for things I already experience/am/feel, the best thing this book gave me is a sense of hope through connection. I yearn to meet other autistic adults! I want to be audaciously me and find others who inspire me to do just that! I want to talk about being masked for so long and receiving a late diagnosis among many other things. This book made me feel like that's possible.

The one qualm I have, despite its best efforts at being inclusive and sharing diverse experiences, is the lack of AAPI representation. I'm biased as an AAPI person but it feels like we are never acknowledged in the conversation. I wonder if it is the author's blindspot/lack of research and study/limited number of pages to address more marginalized groups. This lack of representation made me feel SUS and I almost gave it a 4.75 star for that but because the overall experience of reading it (at the right time) improved my well-being, I gave it a 5 anyway. I will now just go on a quest looking for more research and perspectives from autistic AAPI folks.

An extremely helpful book for those who have always felt different but didn't know why. I highly recommend this book to neurodivergent folks and their families. It helps give context and build empathy!
I found the audiobook somewhat hard to follow because a lot of the stories are somewhat repetitive, so I didn't know where I was. Overall a great primer.

It took me a year to work up the courage to pick this book up.

Thank you.

Unmasking autism review: 5 ⭐️
I read this at the perfect time in my life. At 25 years old I started discovering my neurodiversity through therapy. I’m very fortunate that my therapist is taking the approach of teaching me about self advocacy. I came across this book when we first started these conversations and it has helped me feel extremely seen and validated.

This book is so informational and the intersectional research that is brought into the conversation of autism is much needed. Devon Price also writes in a way that is extremely accessible and inclusive with many testimonials and anecdotes of diverse voices in the autistic community.

I would highly recommend this book to everyone. From people seeking validation on their neurodiverse self discovery to family and friends with loved ones on the spectrum seeking to understand and support, and I’d even recommend this to everyone else in society because information on autism is so underrepresented, white washed, and in drastic need of more attention and compassion in various cultures, socioeconomic upbringings, and schools of thought.
