neil has managed to do it again. this one was not as chaotic as some of the others but it was so beautiful and the plot was just as entertaining. it touched on themes of death and grief and change and i found myself thinking of how far i’ve come with these characters. it was honestly so interesting to reflect on how much dream has grown from the beginning of the series. he is constantly told by other characters that after his imprisonment he has turned a new leaf and time and time again he has told them it is not true. but finally, i think he might just believe them. towards the end of the issue is possibly the most beautiful spread of comic strips that has barely any dialogue it just contains a memory and the words ‘so live’. yes i did cry.

i will leave you with my favourite quote:

*accompanied by a picturesque scene of a night sky full of stars and a silhouetted figures in watercolour*

‘I like stars. it’s the illusion of permanence, i think. i mean, they’re always flaring up and caving in and going out. but from here, i can pretend..

‘i can pretend that things last. i can pretend that lives last longer than moments. gods come, and gods go. mortals flicker and flash and fade.

‘worlds don’t last; and stars and galaxies are transient, fleeting things that twinkle like fireflies and vanish into cold and dust.

‘but i can pretend.’

*still in the same night sky*

‘things are created. they last for some little while, and then they are gone. empires, cities, poems and people. atoms and worlds.

‘one cannot begin a new dream without abandoning the last, eh, brother?’

and finally…

*by a bowl of water turned pink*

‘“you should have gone to her funeral.”

“why? i have not yet said goodbye to eurydice.”

“you should. you are mortal: it is the mortal way. you attend the funeral, you bid the dead farewell. you continue with your life.

“and at times the fact of her absence will hit you like a blow to the chest, and you will weep. but this will happen less and less as time goes on. she is dead. you are alive.

“so live.”

so live…’

literally who said he should be allowed to write something that painful? anyway that’s it. read these comics!!!

Favorite arc so far of the whole Sandman Universe. Beautiful artwork and great storytelling, still relevant to this day.
