This falls in the niche genre that is “the authors love letter to their mother knowing they may never read it”.
This book is here for all the female relationships one will have as a child and how these shape you and can almost break you. I am emotionally devastated

This book made me feel things I've never felt before. For a moment, it made me feel like I'm a part of the Carpenter Family, witnessing everything through my own eyes. Miss Betty Carpenter and her story will forever be etched in my soul. Tiffany McDaniel, thank you so much for writing such an exquisite story, sharing the history of your family. I wish we had an extra star for books like this.

Please check trigger warnings before you read this book. I went in blind and it was an emotional rollercoaster and then some.

The motifs of nature and culture were woven really beautifully throughout this story. Gut wrenching writing about racism, classism and what it is to be a girl/woman and the adversities and violence they face. A magnificent coming-of-age story with superb writing and character.

I have seen other people say that the book comes across as pretentious and unlike things a young girl would say. However, I would politely disagree with this. I feel that discredits the emotional intelligence and intellect that children can have, although they are young. The wisdom that Betty expresses throughout the novel perfectly mirrors the wisdom of which her father bestowed upon her.
