Started reading this because I wanted a nostalgia hit, thinking it would be a blast back to my childhood. Ended up questioning everything at 1:15 at night. Highly recommended if you like grimdark/dystopia.

Philip abbiamo capito che Hester è brutta puoi anche smetterla di ripeterlo ogni capitolo, ti prego.
Libro abbastanza scorrevole, con uno stile perfetto per ragazzi, ma con un numero eccessivo di morti, soprattutto di personaggi innocenti. World building molto interessante, con l'idea delle città che camminano e di come tutto venga riciclato per le risorse limitate (diciamo che non mangerei quello snack marrone con un odore molto forte, ecco) e una morale opposta alla guerra, che può portare solo morte e distruzione, onestamente apprezzata.
Lo stile del libro non riesce però a trasmettere i pensieri e le emozioni dei personaggi appieno, rendendoli carenti a livello caratteriale, come pupazzi che seguono il corso della storia senza riflettere.
Per questo motivo Tom è un protagonista abbastanza vuoto, che ritiene le città Anti-trazionaliste barbare e una pagina dopo cambia idea, in un ragionamento che dura un paragrafo circa. Egli sembra compiere azioni solo quando gli convengono, come per esempio viene liberato dal sindaco pirata e ritenuto importante, ma non fa niente per aiutare gli altri schiavi che per poco non raggiungeva; o quando decide di guardare il conflitto tra Anna e Valentine e guarda aspetta un attimo che adesso ti prendo anche i popcorn (omg com'è possibile che la spada che potevi benissimo togliere a Valentine e non l'hai fatto ha portato alla morte di Anna. Unbelievable)
Il fatto che lui uccida Shriek lo aiuta, anche se toglie un po' al personaggio di Hester, che non riesce ad affrontare il suo papi robot assassino, ma deve essere salvata da un uomo (ew).
Hester personaggio abbastanza complesso, chiuso al mondo a causa dei suoi traumi e della sua rabbia nei confronti del mondo, che l'ha sfigurata, ma che prova lo stesso a continuare a vivere e che cerca di non abbandonare i propri sentimenti. Il fatto che venga riferito al lettore da un altro personaggio che Hester parli di Tom, senza mostrarci la scena direttamente, è un po' fastidioso, come anche il fatto che sia Hester stessa che ci spieghi il suo carattere, di come sia fredda ma provi ad aprirsi al mondo, senza, che ne so, farcelo capire da soli. Philip non siamo scemi non devi sempre spiegare le cose. E soprattutto non devi ripetere a ogni capitolo quanto sia cessa Hester che ce lo ricordiamo.
Tutti i personaggi femminili, però, soffrono della scrittura dell'autore: nessuna di loro ha una risoluzione al proprio conflitto. Anna è pronta ad uccidere Valentine, ma quest'ultimo perde tempo per aspettare una distrazione e la uccide lui stesso; Katherine è pronta a fare esplodere l'arma di distruzione di massa, ma uh oh Valentine l'ha uccisa;
Hester è pronta a uccidere Valentine, ma quest'ultimo è stato ucciso dall'arma di distruzione di massa. E che cazzo.
Non credo che questa sia una coincidenza, anche perché poi l'autore scrive cose del genere "Il dio degli Aviatori era un tipo dall’aria cordiale – la corpulenta statua rossa posta sull’altare ricordò a Tom Chudleigh Pomeroy –, ma sua moglie, la dea degli Alti Cieli, era infida e crudele. Se riteneva che qualcuno l’avesse offesa era capace di scatenare terribili uragani o incendiare serbatoi e bombole di gas” e i dubbi non ci sono più.
E no , Philip, non starò a ragionare su quanto Valentine sia un personaggio complesso e interessante, perché è un uomo adulto che uccide un mare di gente e capisce che quello che sta facendo potrebbe essere sbagliato solo quando glielo dice la figlia sedicenne. Fra? Serio? Non hai mai pensato che uccidere migliaia di persone con la tua città camminante potrebbe essere sbagliato? Come tutti gli omicidi che fai tu in prima persona?
E capisco che Valentine sia tipo una mega spia super intelligente, ma il fatto che in cinque minuti dia fuoco a un parcheggio di astronavi e uccida un numero imprecisato di guardie è così ridicolo che fa ridere. Ah yes, he's fast.
Libro che si basa abbastanza sulle coincidenze, how convenient che Anna li trovi mentre stanno scappando e li salvi perché anche lei è stata schiava e orfana come i due, su come i personaggi prima supportino il Darwinismo delle città e poi si offendano che una città è stata mangiata e la sua gente uccisa, su morti che avvengono e l'autore non si sofferma troppo, rendendo tutta la narrazione molto fredda (e immaginarsi i personaggi morti nella posizione di Peter Griffin che cade dalle scale è abbastanza divertente e appropriato).
Il cattivo del libro è ovviamente cattivissimo, anche se credo che alla fine credesse di stare dentro a Star Wars ("«Quando avremo divorato anche l’ultima città su ruote e demolito anche l’ultimo insediamento stazionista, cominceremo a scavare. Costruiremo enormi motori alimentati dall’energia del nucleo terrestre e devieremo il pianeta dalla sua orbita. Andremo a divorare Marte, Venere e gli asteroidi. Divoreremo anche il sole, poi veleggeremo nello spazio profondo. Fra un milione di anni la nostra gloriosa Londra viaggerà ancora, non più in cerca di città di cui nutrirsi, ma di nuovi mondi!»” …what).
Differenze sociali che vengono affrontate nel libro, su come i detenuti muoiono letteralmente nella merda, ma il climax del libro fa morire solo altre centinaia di poveri innocenti e quindi vabbè a quanto pare Philip si era dimenticato di questo punto.
Lo consiglierei? Per quanto sia scorrevole e abbia una premessa interessante, no. A meno che genocidi di innocenti non piacciano, de gustibus.

Positives. I knew before starting this book that the worldbuilding would be top-notch but it defied my expectations. The worldbuilding (as it should be) is not only done at the societal level, such as the way 'city Darwinism' functions and the divide between the 'tractionists' and 'anti-tractionists', but it is also pushed through in the minute details of everyday life; from the way letter paper has been recycled so much that it has gained a rough texture to the commodification of artefacts as status symbols. It is brilliant!
I also enjoy how this novel flipped the script on the relationship between Tom and Katherine, who you feel might get together in the end as a hero/heroine couple. Instead, they don't interact after the first murder attempt on Valentine, and they grow closer to other main characters.
Lastly, I must warn you about how horrifically dark this novel gets. Because it is YA sci-fi, you might get lured into a false sense that this will be a fun, lighthearted, sci-fi adventure. But don't be fooled, you'll be met with a harrowing tale of war in which no side (not the good, nor the bad) has a clean slate, and in which life-saving decisions may take away more than is gained.
Negatives. I think the book could have benefitted from some more vibrant descriptions and colourful word usage. The scenes and worldbuilding were fantastic- the language didn't measure up. I highly suspect this is a translation issue so I will not judge the book to harshly for that.

Schnell, mitreißend und nie langweilig. Einfach mal wieder ein nettes Buch, das sich zügig lesen ließ.
Kein literarisches Meisterwerk, aber es hat Spaß gemacht, und das ist doch das wichtigste.
Sehr gut fand ich auch, dass es kein Love Triangle gab. Es hat sich zwar eins angedeutet, aber es wurde mehr und mehr klar, dass daraus nichts wird.
Einen halben Stern Abzug gibt es, weil sich 5 Sterne dann doch irgendwie nicht richtig anfühlt, und weil ich immer wieder verwirrt war, für welches Alter das Buch gedacht ist. Vom leichten Schreibstil eher junge Teenager, aber dann sterben viele Charaktere auf erstaunlich brutale Weise, was eher Richtung Erwachsenenalter deutet.

The world has become a wasteland and cities have become mobile in order to survive. In the past, the landscape was salvaged but now that resources are running low, cities have started relying on each other to survive. And not in a wholesome cooperative kind of way. Larger cities chase down and eat smaller cities (which at least have the advantage of speed) in order to survive.
I don't know if it's just a me thing, but it almost felt like there was a bit of a mismatch between the writing style and the contents of this book. The writing felt more like what you typically find in books for younger teens, while the contents themselves were rather grisly. I loved the world building though. It's a very unique idea and I'm definitely interested in learning more about it, even if everything else was far more simplistic than I expected it to be. I haven't decided if I will continue the series yet, but the world its set in is definitely its strong point.

The world was really cool and well described, but sadly I felt that the characters were incredibly bland. There was a lot of detail when it came to places and environments that I loved, but when it came to characters' thoughts and feelings, it suddenly was incredibly simplistic. Tom, the main character, is just sorta there for most of the plot and does virtually nothing, nor does he have a lot of interesting thoughts or emotions about it all. It didn't help that the ending felt incredibly dissatisfying.
Bonus points for letting a major female character be way outside of beauty standards though. The fact that Hester's face is described without trying to pretty up her scars and disfigurements was something I genuinely appreciated.

This was a fun and nostalgic adventure. Honestly, I'm a little bias because I watched the movie a few months ago because of Robert Sheehan and loved the world and the characters so much that I wanted to read more about them, and also because they never made the other movies I wanted to know how the story continues. So... I loved Tom. And Hester. Katherine was cute, and her ending hurt, I wasn't expecting it. And also Dog, my god, that was sad, poor thing, he deserved better.
The plot wasn't a big thing for me, but I still enjoyed, but honestly what I enjoyed the most was the ride, the adventure, the traveling and knowing how different parts of the world adapted. I eager to keep going with the series. It's a nice break from adult epic fantasy and sci-fi.
