I really enjoyed this first book, and I liked the insta-attraction, slow burn dynamic between

Elias and Laia

. I also appreciated the slow burn aspect of

Laia's power, because usually these things are like shes instantly the chosen one, but in this case, she barely learned anything except hints to the reader

World building was good, I liked the side characters mostly, and the stakes were believable.

WHY have i not read this book SOONER!! this is one of the first fantasies i’ve read as an audiobook that has completely transported me. the characters were so well fleshed out and had so much depth to them which is what i find lacking in a lot of fantasy stories. this book had everything: adventure, strength, resilience, betrayal, and a hint of love. will be reading the rest of the series as soon as i can

Why didn't I write a review of this? Seems odd.

Oh--there was the one thing. If there are four virtue trials required to select the next chosen one, don't make the winning score two. What if the same person wins the first two events? Do the last two virtues only count in the event of a tie?
