I've read a few duds lately, so this was exactly what I needed. It was hard to put down and resulted in a few incredibly late nights. It was engaging, unique, and well written.
The Ancient Rome inspiration was awesome and incredibly fresh. I can't say enough about it. I wish YA literature had more of this influence - at least more of it done well. Because it was awesome.
And, the book is incredibly cinematic, which I absolutely relished. Everything is so visual and well developed. The world building was effective as were the action sequences. But, all of this is a result of Sabaa Tahir's fantastic writing which is so poetic and lyrical at times. I loved the subtle metaphors and quiet moments as much as the tense action scenes. Plus, I was a fan of HOW it was told. I don't always like alternating POVs, but this worked so well for me. The first person narrative for each perspective was also great. I was unsure how that would work, but both Laia and Elias had distinct voices and I found myself eager at the end of each chapter to pick up where the other character left off.
My only critique - and even then, it's minor - is the love ... square?? I'm not even sure how to describe it. But, the overall point is: I didn't hate it. I actually liked it for the most part, which was a huge surprise to me because I'm usually not on board with most YA love triangles/squares/shapes. There were a few moments where it was a slight distraction, but it worked okay for me otherwise because it was not the FOCUS of the plot or the main characters. There is too much going on otherwise for these characters to be solely consumed by the romance. Having said that, I am anxious however to see where it might go in the second book.
Which, is good news! Prior to reading An Ember in the Ashes, I heard initial rumors that there were no plans for a sequel. But, I see that has been recently denied by Tahir, who has confirmed that a sequel is in the works!
Final verdict. A refreshing, unique, and exiting fantasy. I'll close with what I wrote in my book journal after finishing: YES!!!!!!!!!

Кратко и ясно ще споделя мнението си за книгата. Първо, бях много щастлив и развълнуван, когато разбрах, че тази книга ще бъде издавана в САЩ, защото бях много заинтригуван от резюмето, а представете си емоцията ми, когато разбрах месец по-късно, че Сиела ще я превеждат. Това е първата книга на Сабаа Тахир и мога да кажа, че се е справила много добре. Сцените с битки и насилие бяха много добре предадени и човек придобива ясна идея за целия този свят, в които се развиват действията. В началото не бях очарован от героите, но те претърпяха голямо развитие за периода на историята. Обобщено, "Въглен в пепелта" е една вълнуваща и пълна с напрежение книга и напълно заслужава добрите си отзиви.

4,5 Me ha gustado muchísimo. Hacía tiempo que no leía una distopia y este libro ha sido tan genial, tanto la historia como los personajes, me han maravillado. Lo único que no me ha gustado han sido las relaciones amorosas que se dan en el libro, ya que las he visto muy forzadas y poco creíbles.
