such a cute romansty book! the characters in this book were so refreshing to read, but the book overall was much more character driven than plot driven, which did make it a bit boring (especially towards the end where the author essentially *told* and didn't *show* the answer to all the small clues she had been dropping in regards to the plot).
typically, it is the guy that is morally ambiguous, but my elias is the most hot, pure hearted guy there is (#needthatsobad). laia has so much determination and helene's loyalty is out of this world. we love izzi and the cook and teluman <3 i do wish though that we got to see more of laia's character development because her only personality trait was saving her brother and feeling like she wasn't as amazing as her parents. i may or may not read the next book, but the author definitely set it up wonderfully for a sequel.

A fun adventurous read despite being YA! I had a great time with the engaging plot, diverse characters, and fantastic worldbuilding. Excited to keep reading the series.

Let me start off by saying that this book was awesome. I enjoyed it sooo much. I loved all the characters (even the bad ones). I felt like all the characters were so well developed by the end of the book, and they all had things that were deeper than what was shown on the surface. I loved how Laia went from this weak, cowardly girl to being kick ass and blowing things up to help Elias escape. Elias went from being ignorant to the situation with their empire, to being loyal to the people on the lowest side of the chain. It really annoyed me how all the other masks thought that what they were doing to the scholars was justifiable. They all thought it was completely okay and were blind to what was happening.
However, Some things I didn't like was how the world was so underdeveloped. We didn't get to see anything from outside this empire, and even then is was mostly limited to the school. I just think it'd be pretty cool to see how other places in the world worked, what their cultures would be like, and so on. I also wish that the whole magic thing would've been explained a little bit more. We got a small glimpse of SOME magic as well as mystical creatures, but outside of that I didn't learn much about it.
Some things that I REALLY hope I get to see in the books following this one are, one, world development and seeing how places outside this empire work. Two, having the whole magic thing explained a little more (as well as those ogre things or whatever). And thirdly, I really want to know a detailed version of the commandant's past. It'd be really fascinating to know what made her the way she is now.
