Kimmel shows great perception for the emotional landscape of young vulnerable characters. In this novel, as well as "The Shore Girl" (my fave of the two), she writes with depth and understanding.

Oh this book. Oh my heart.

Coming from a place where I know the wants for children and a family- this story his every single heart string I had. This imperfect family gave when they thought they had nothing left to give. I just can't get enough of this story. Like someone else said in their review- It is like a hallmark movie, minus the terrible love story line. Do yourself a favor and pick this book up!!

I really didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. Don't get me wrong, I didn't like the mom for pretty much the entire book, tragic backstory aside. But the touching story of a family coming together for christmas when the world seems to be against them makes it a positively wonderful story. I honestly don't know what else to say about it. It's simple, vaguely disturbing, and it's wonderful. Voila!

This story truly moved me. Experiencing the healing of someone who is so hurt and broken, by someone else who is so broken themselves captivated me I. Ways I didn’t expect. The lives of a pretty typical looking family are so very different when seen from the inside. A small, scared and frightened girl prompted the entire family to open up and see themselves, and each other in whole new ways. Yes I had tears in my eyes at the end! That hasn’t happened in a while!
