Original concept and solid story with good character development. While the writing style was a bit dry for me, I did get used to it and came to enjoy the story. But the story to me seemed to abruptly end right before the climax, which sort of left me feeling frustrated. It's like, as soon as things really get moving the book just plain STOPS? I get leaving things on a cliffhanger to set it up for a sequel, but there was not much in the way of resolution by the time the book ended. More like a lot of unanswered questions that never even came close to being truly examined. The story was just starting to take shape and bear direction and seemed to be heading toward a climax that never came. Annoying!

Dragged a bit compared to the first one. The self pity and ineptitude, while making sense for the characters, did make them a bit hard to read at times. Though once Sam left the castle, his inability to do anything became extremely funny. This definitely reads like an older fantasy story which is both a pro and a con.
