There are times I wish StoryGraph and other apps where you could add more stars because you loved it and other times I wish negative stars were a thing…such was the case of this book. Went to the library looking for a short story that would give me some inspiration? Nostalgia? Something to make me go “Wow! That was a great book! Not this one…

I’m not a picky person, but I just felt like the background of London and especially the scenes of every conversation was dirty, greasy, and disgusting to the touch. When Pearson’s went to the house it just made me cringe and feel filthy.

I thought him having a Sam spade/Dick Tracy/ Sherlock Holmes attitude would be a good new pace from most of my fantasy books, but after this I need something lighthearted, but it just didn’t feel good to read it…to the point I started skimming the conversations because those 102 pages would be torture if I read it in it’s entirety.

Cussing usually doesn’t make me uncomfortable, but this every conversation was towards me as an outsider…

Maybe it was just not my cup of tea or maybe I just didn’t like this book. Feel free to give it a shot, but as for me…no thank you. I’ll try a different book by Cassandra Khaw, but it’ll be a hot minute…leaving now to read a Garfield or peanuts comic now.

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

Trying waaaaaaay too hard to be Constantine in the Maltese Falcon but just comes off as a high school boy with more fedora than personality.

It was with some trepidation I picked up another Cassandra Khaw work given how absolutely terrible nothing but blackened teeth was - literally one of the worst things I read last year - but this one ACTUALLY seems to have been edited somewhat, plus the characters are not nearly as annoying. I enjoyed the gumshoe slang even if it got a bit tired near the end, and John being an extremely tired and irritated yith who hates being a bug and would rather be a human slowly disintegrating was a mood.

Meh.
