Bloodshed Academy: Year One by Jen L. Grey

I liked this book for the most part but it felt really rushed. The slow burn and irritation rage and raven had before they were together wasn’t there much. It felt skipped over when it’s such a lovely part of the story. All the sudden they had the moment and raven realized they were mates. I was reading thinking ‘wait that happened randomly’.
I would have loved to see the book slowed down.
Overall not bad.

It’s likely I would have liked this if I’d read it when it first came out, but I’ve grown and changed as a reader over the last few years, and I'm much more critical as a result.

I strongly disliked the FMC and MMC (I didn’t mind the three secondary characters: Cole, Damien and Jess). Both thought they were better people than they actually were, when in fact both of them were perfectly fine mistreating anyone they didn’t personally like. Don’t get me started on the antagonists, all of which were shallow stereotypes.

I LOVED this BOOK! I am so glad I took a chance on this well written book with dynamic characters and world building that is unbelievable! Raven as never felt that connection to her wolf like most Shifters. So imagine her shock & surprise when someone from the ELITE Bloodshed Academy was there to recruit her!?! Will she fight for what she loves or run from the life she never wanted? Read it to find out!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I didn't like the pacing. The characters were one dimensional. I kept hoping something would happen that would make things interesting. Sadly, it didn't.

When Ashley died - it didn't feel impactful. Shouldn't a character's death affect me in some way? It doesn't have to be because I like the character who's dying but because I care about the main character. I genuinely didn't care for Raven. There was nothing about her that was interesting. As people have mentioned already the 6 months flash forward didn't work for me. I didn't like the instalove or even the instant friendships in this story.

This was not my favorite novel of Jen's. But I did enjoy it, and I'm interested in seeing where she takes it.

1st reread: All I have to say is this is the type of book that is enjoyed the second time you read it. You pick up on SO MANY more details of the pull between Raven and Rage and it's amazing.

And Cole? LOVE HIM.

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Call me surprised.

I FLOVED this paranormal, shifter, high YA romance. Raven was fiesty and strong, Rage...I FLOVED him too. Cole was a hoot, Jess was sweet, and Damien was protective.

I like that this isn't a reverse harem (that I do like) but rather a true mate story that also has other guys who love her as a friend. THAT is so rare in these books and so refreshing.

Raven is recruited to Bloodshed Academy where the girls are mean, and her wolf refuses to mesh with her fully. Once they mesh together, the true mate bond shows and things progress.

Really, nothing too exciting happened in this book other than that one fight. But I really found myself enjoying the plot, characters, and fast-paced plot.

Loved it

Great storyline and romance. Weird at first, I pictured Rage this big blockhead. I don't know why lol. Damien is my favorite of the 3 guys. I loved that the sex scenes weren't over the top descriptive or inappropriate. But I did wish her and Rage had more of a foundation to their connection. The story itself is good. Typical bullies and a little predictable but I sure didn't mind apparently since I first finished reading it in literally one day.

It was good

It was a decent story. There were a few parts that were a bit over the top, but overall it was good. I’m looking forward to the next one.

Raven is a wolf shifter but she’s never felt connected to her wolf and presumed that’s how it’s supposed to be.
Her BF Greg tells her a scout from the Bloodshed Academy is attending his game and he expects he will be scouted for the elite academy for Alphas however that’s not how things turn out.
Raven is at the game when she realises she’s being watched and then she sees a vampire watching her she gets quite sassy with him and he tells her he’s here to enrol her in the academy and he will be back for her in 2 weeks.
When the time arrives she has forgotten about the vampires words and when he approaches her with the sexiest guy she’s ever seen she realises they are here for her although Greg throws his toys out of his pram about them not wanting him she reluctantly goes.
Ravens interaction with Cole is excellent he is so funny and she gives as good as she gets then there’s the thing between her and Rage she can’t quite understand. Her first interaction with Damian doesn’t go quite as she would like it to go but they do eventually get on which is more that you can say for the haters. Ashley and her two vampire cohorts are out to get Raven but they get more than they expected . I just love Jess her room mate and they get on so well together and Cole even likes Jess and tells her she’s part of their pack. Brittany Goodwin is such a good narrator I just love listening to all her characters.
