This was the playful and fun quick read I needed this week. And yet, I learned something, too. I'll (maybe) let y'all know how the releasing fears and shame exercise goes for me.

This has a few laughs and it was, of course, lovely to hear Leslie Jordan’s voice again. However, it was not a great book and, if it had been any longer, I would have DNFd it. My primary issue is that it is not edited into a cohesive narrative. It is really just a collection of short stories with many having overlapping details and redundant punch lines. For instance he says he fell immediately into his mother’s high heels after his birth. That was funny once, but when it is said in back to back chapters, not so much.

Quick listen that kept me entertained. I just love Leslie and his little giggle. I kept on laughing throughout and enjoyed it.

funny hopeful inspiring lighthearted reflective relaxing fast-paced
What a lovely book. Short and spunky, just as Leslie is fondly remembered. This book focuses on tales from movie and TV sets to heartfelt stories growing up in Tennessee as a flamboyant youth. Leslie's darker past is brought up quite a bit, but in a way that shows he's not dwelling on these times anymore. He has worked through them, holds space for them for what they were, and uses them to live a stronger, happier life. Leslie's story is one of joy through adversities, and to hear his signature drawl tell it brings an instant smile to your face.

This book has been such a joy to listen to. Leslie Jordan’s vivacious joy, sassy humor, and earnest openness is sorely missed, yet shines through in this heartfelt series of essays. His reflections on shame, it’s sources, and the need to work at happiness in defiance of it is wonderful. His life was truly one well lived.
