I was totally enraptured by this book. There was a melancholic beauty that really resonated with me, and lines that will stick with me for awhile.

The Red Address Book

I am so happy I finished reading this spectacular book in the comfort of my living room and not on the commuter train. This striking story about a 96-year-old woman who decides to write short stories about the people listed in her address book as a memento to her great-niece, made me cry like a baby. On her 10th birthday, Doris receives a red address book from her father. Shortly after, her father dies, and her life is set unto a path which will lead her to new countries, new escapades and many heartaches. She will meet extraordinary people and some not so much. As a young woman in Paris, she meets Allan and it is love at first sight. Allan disappears suddenly, and her heart is broken, but it will not be the last time they will be together.

This is a heartening story of love, loss, making mistakes, atoning oneself, and finding love again.

I want to thank Raincoast Books for the advanced copy of The Read Address Book by Sofia Lundberg. This internationally acclaimed book has been published in 28 territories worldwide. This is a book to put on your TBR list when it comes out on January 8, 2019.

To jums bÅ«s jāuzzin paÅ”iem, ja izlemsiet izlasÄ«t grāmatu.

Lai gan stāsts kopumā man patika un tieÅ”i tādēļ grāmatu arÄ« izvēlējos izlasÄ«t, tas kā tas ticis uzrakstÄ«ts atstāja tādas paplÅ«duÅ”as formas iespaidu, ko nekas Ä«sti nesatur kopā. PietrÅ«ka emocijas un detaļu no pagātnes. Taču,kad stāsts risinājās tagadnē - Dorisas 96 gados - Ŕķita daudz liekas informācijas un atstāja tādu iespaidu,ka tiek rakatÄ«ts rakstÄ«Å”anas pēc. ÄŖsti nenoticēju tēliem. Tomēr, ja kāds nolems izveidot filmu pēc Ŕī romāna motÄ«viem - tai vajadzētu bÅ«t labai!

The story is about 96-year-old Doris. She is dying, so she writes about her memories of her life from the people she listed in the Red Address Book her father gave her as a birthday present when she was a little girl. She writes about her time as a housemaid in Paris, a mannequin in Paris, a cook on a cargo ship, and a fishmonger.
I loved Doris because she took what life gave her and made the best life she could. She was a survivor, brave, smart, a fighter, but at times quite impulsive.
The overarching theme is love and Doris' life reflected her three loves, Gosta, Jenny, and Allen. The author also talked about not being afraid of life.
Another thing I liked about the book is that it gave insights into aging and the wisdom of older women.
This is one of my favorite books of 2021.

The premise of The Red Address Book intrigued me from the start. We learn about this 96 year-old woman's life through the old address book she has kept for years. So many of the people she has known and loved in the past are gone now but she still has her memories of them and the time they had together. I loved Doris and her spunkinessā€”what an interesting life she led. And the relationship she had with her grandniece, Jenny, was very special and heartwarming to witness.

This was a beautifully written story and I found myself totally wrapped up in the lives of Doris and Jenny. This is Sofia's debut novel and I'm excited to see what else she has in store for us as readers. What an amazing, wonderful story!

In The Red Address Book by Sofia Lundberg, Doris is an elderly woman who acknowledges her death is imminent. She has one great niece who is dear to her; as they live in different countries, their connections are limited to Skype sessions. While Doris values those encounters, she doesn't want Jenny to be unaware of the life Doris lived as a young woman, a life that spans countries, beginning with the circumstances that cause Doris to be sent away from home at a young age to work as a servant, only to be welcomed into the live mannequin world, filled with glamour and drudgery. Love, loss, and heartache follow.

Doris takes to typing up her life story, both in hopes Jenny will be able to come into possession of the stories and to fill her empty days. The story is framed by the entries in her red address book, nearly all of whom are deceased. Some individuals only warrant one chapter, others we return to repeatedly.

Both the flashbacks and the present-day sections are engaging and their juxtapositions give us pause as we try to make the transition, much as Doris experiences when she's deep in a captivating flashback, only to be returned to the present day with an impatient caregiver and the reality of her failing body.

The Red Address Book is a solid story. It may not linger with me after having completed it, but the experience was pleasant.

(I received a digital ARC from NetGalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in exchange for my honest review.)
