I think I like the books with less Count Olaf. It’s refreshing to have things go wrong in the Beaudelaires’ lives that don’t have to do with an old white man. (Which is how I imagine him thanks to the Netflix portrayal by Neil Patrick Harris).

Quotes:
“I’ve never been so insulted in my life. No, I have, many times in fact.”

“There’s not a day I don’t think of her, except for when it slips my mind”

“We don’t have time for you two to do all that flirting, either!”

“Anyone can write up a citation for bravery, and I have even been known to write one for myself from time to time, in order to keep my spirits up in the middle of a treacherous journey.”

“You might think that climbing a mountain is half the battle, only to find out the mountain goats, who live at the top, are vicious, and heavily armed.”

I really enjoyed this one
with the concept of poisonous mycelium and the character dynamics of Captain Widdershin -though he's not in it for long - Fiona, and her brother. The way the characters have developed over the series is really cool and I love how the author is trying to show that no matter how bad the other side seems, there is still lots of grey area in it even if the actions are still quite irrational and meant for comedy - this is a kids book, if it took these aspects any more seriously then it would just be depressing.
With this and the mysterious, massive question mark shaped submarine that never gets revealed and the way the group goes to where it all began I think that this book was one of the best and interesting ones.

5 stars.
