Every couple of years I reread this and the original. Although there are some stand out stories within this (The Comical Field being one of my favorites- such a creepy story), overall the original book is definitely superior.
I appreciate that Adams made an effort to focus more on female characters- as this was a criticism of the first book. Overall it was nice to return to this world- the lore and vocabulary are so detailed. 3.5/5.

Not as great or heartbreaking as its predecessor, but still fantastic.

This book was a liiiittle bit more readable to me than Watership Down. I still skipped some stories I had no interest in, but enjoyed a couple.
Better than nothing, I guess.
I think Richard Adams is not an author for me, as I'm struggling way too much with his writing.
At least, I now know what all the fuss is about.

While the original novel is no walk in the park, be warned there's a graphic scene involving . It's a fine companion novel, otherwise. Not mind-blowing, just fine. If you did't like or read the original, I probably wouldn't bother reading this, and it's not really required even if you did read/like the original. It just fleshes out the world a teeny, tiny bit without breaking much new ground.
Spoiler
rabbits killing a non-aggressive cat for giggles, something that would bother me at any time, but more so because I just lost my tuxedo cat barely a month before I read this (the cat in the book was b/w)
