The scene made me nostalgic for a girlhood I'd never had.
Three best friends, drinking sweet wine. The prism hanging from the fishing line in the window, and the jewelry hanging from nails, and the nail polish on the dresser, and the uneaten bags of fruit candy. We were sharing secrets in the fading light, laughing like sleigh bells, wearing colorful socks. I felt like I was getting an education.

I enjoyed this book. Not a lot going on here but I do like when girls get to be freaks, losers, weirdos, etc. I do wish some of the side characters had been given more attention because I felt like they all fell a little flat and I could not get myself to care about them. The most stunning character of all was Alaska itself - God’s own country. Maybe I should go to Alaska …?

The Seaplane on Final Approach was fine. My neutrality towards it is probably a result of false advertising. This book was billed as dark but is only a little bit dark. It was billed as sexy and I suppose it is - if repeated fantasizing is hot to you. It was billed as feral and... it's also not very feral. Some scenes in the beginning with Mira's "marvelous aunt" and the final scenes at the lodge are the only ones that count towards the dark/feral vibes. The rest is merely a lot of teen voyeurism and angst.

So what is this book about? The Seaplane on Final Approach is a new adult tale about self-discovery and disappointment. Mira obsessively catalogs anything that she deems as sleazy. Beyond that, though, her narration keeps readers at arm's length. Other than sleaze and a fisherman named Ed, we ultimately get to know very little about Mira. I'd love to have known more about her feelings and opinions beyond those two categories.
