Really disappointed by this book. I'd been hoping for something on the same level as Arcanes storytelling, but this felt hobbled to the lore in a way Arcane never did. It jumped from scene to scene, with little time spent on the motivations behind the actions beyond occasional "Haha, Viego's such a bad king, amirite? And crazy too!" It could have done so much more with the body horror leading up to the reveal, but it felt like the author was just given 0 room to work in.

Very well written. The story loses steam at some point between 30% and 50%. But after that point, it becomes great again. I know the story, but the addition of other characters and many Easter eggs was genuinely interesting. League needs to release more novels.

It’s such a simple story that doesn’t say much, which is okay given the public consists of people who generally don’t read much (so it makes a nice and easy step into the world of literature!).
What I do have a problem with is the excessive use of archaic words; it’s unnecessary. Reynolds seems to be in a constant search for the biggest and most epic words to describe everything instead of focussing on what exactly he wants to tell you. With the combination of the intended public this use of vocabulary is even more unnecessary.
I’m not saying it’s hard to read, he doesn’t use complex words, the fault lies in the use of pompous words. But maybe that’s just the way Australian English is written?
