As somebody who plays League of Legends and whose one of their mains is Viego, I was quite excited for this book. I did get the hard copy but found it to be a relatively boring read? My mother has audible though barely uses it so I decided to give the audiobook a try instead and used one of the tokens to get it free (I especially wanted to hear more of Sean Teale's voice work as Viego), despite preferring to read than listen to books. This was my first real listen through an audiobook.
The audio book is literally a thousand times better than reading it. The voice acting elevates it to a place it desperately needs to be. It turned what would have been a two-star read up to a four-star one. Though the language is repetitive in the overall narrative at times, the voice work and the narrator do a good job of keeping your attention focused.
Really my only complaints are the repetition within the writing, Hecarim's voice (seriously, it sounded like those old impressions people used to do as Snapebefore J.K. Rowling outed herself as a horrific transphobe), the inclusion of Necrit which every time he appeared took me right out of it momentarily because I only kept thinking of the YouTuber, and a lack of Viego POV. The worldbuilding also could have been better but this is Riot and I often have to pick up the slack for them when I write fanfiction so this was not surprising.
We get so many POVs in this story and yet we get none from the very man whose grief and pain is what caused the very Ruination to occur. It would have simply been nice to have even a couple small sections to get more into the head of Viego and see how his sorrow is twisting his mind not to mention a more intimate look into him from the man himself. An immensely interesting opportunity was missed in that.
Otherwise, a pretty damn satisfying novel but I really do recommend the audiobook over reading it yourself. The physical copy nearly bored me to tears. Good acting really does change everything!

Definitely not a ruined book! The storytelling is so well done. From a dedicated league of legends fan, being able to see the characters come to life and interacting with one another is such a surreal and wonderful experience. Will want a sequel or prequel to this book ASAP!

I felt like there was definitely room for improvement in the characters and how they interacted. For people who play league of legends the book handles the subtlety of the nods like it is wielding a hammer. That said this book tells the story of a tragedy well enough and I hope that the author or another backed by riot learn from the shortcomings and give us more of the world to explore. I love to see champions given more life like Kalista which I will always think about differently looking at her visuals.
An INCREDIBLY solid book, I’m pretty amazed. Coming off Arcane, I was thrilled to see that a League of Legends novel has been published so I decided to take a peek at this.
The characters in this novel are so truly flawed and human and how each’s personality drives this story is actually wonderful to see unfold. I love how this novel allows the characters to fail and propel the story even further. It also makes great use of multiple POVs!
I would definitely recommend this to any fan of Arcane looking to step their toes back into Runeterra (without having to play LoL itself). It’s very easy to digest this book without knowing much about League (I’ve barely touched that game). I would definitely recommend NOT looking up the characters if you don’t know them from League cause it spoils what it’s an incredibly epic ending.
