I think this was the best book I've read so far this year. The story was unique and very well thought out, and it had some of the most interesting characters of any book I've ever read. The story was very thought-provoking and made me think about the concepts of history and identity in ways I had not before. I also really liked that it explored the motivations behind each of the characters' choices and stories in ways that really made the reader think about them. Bennett is a wonderful writer and tells the story so remarkably well. I will definitely be thinking about this book for a long time into the future. I would recommend this book to just about anyone in the world, and particularly anyone who is looking for a good historical-fiction book to read.

This book was different to anything that I have ever read before and I think it is something that a lot of people should read. I learned a lot from this book about the varying experiences of people of colour and the racism within communities. Bennett's writing is intriguing, heart-felt, honest and raw – which is what made me really like this book. There was no avoiding the issues at hand here: it was stated clearly and boldly... it was the life lived by millions of people.
I highly recommend this book!

A very informative read with vivid character explorations. Has a good representation of a trans individual without making their transition the only character aspect. Develops diverse characters and not afraid to make them unlovable.

“This big ol' world and we only get to go through it once. The saddest thing there is, you ask me.”

this is one of those book I just bought without knowing anything about it but I had a feeling...I am so glad I have a physical copy I could annotate, truly.

I did not cry like I thought I would but I was angry most of the time with some of the characters, but I love the writing and cannot wait to read more by the author
