I appreciated the experimental and reflective structure of the different parts of the book.
The referential layers in the pioneer part; the NPC part, the A/B structure of both sides.

The fictional elements are very well woven into the contemporary world, I believe there really is an unfair games with developers Sam and Sadie.

I don’t really understand the hype around this book 🙈 Don’t get me wrong, a couple parts did catch my attention
like Sadie’s pregnancy and Marx’s death
but I really struggled with the overall story and keeping me engaged. I understand the message but the writing style wasn’t for me personally.

I was skeptical about reading a book about characters who create video games. After all, my gaming experience consists of an 8 hour straight Sims marathon (I barely stopped to pee) and a mild animal crossing addiction (okay maybe not so mild). This book made me want to drop everything and spend an entire day gaming. I am disappointed that the games Sam and Sadie created do not exist in real life because this book made me want to experience the world they hold within them (A great marketing venture missed if you ask me). I think the thing that appealed to me about this story was that it described games as something you could become immersed in, much like a good book.

The story was interesting and addictive at times. The world of video game creation felt exciting and palpable. My favourite part of the book was when they were creating Ichigo over the summer, with many sleepless nights. I loved following the characters from when they were children; they were raw, messy yet realistic characters who were not all that likeable at times. At some points I just wanted to scream at Sam and Sadie out the frustration of their lack of communication. I wasn't rooting for them in a romantic sense but was hoping they would just communicate and rekindle their friendship of many many years.

What happened to Marx came out of the blue and I didn't really see how it added to the story. He didn't deserve it, the characters didnt deserve it and we certainly didn't deserve it!

Overall an enjoyable book with an interesting premise! Maybe I will try video games because of it
