Dementia 21 is a book I'd recommend for anyone who loves surrealist horror but really just wants to take a break from anything heavy.

The book itself is a partially satirical partially just werid exploration of what if scenarios in this fictional universe. It's gruesome, funny, and all around just a good time. Yukie Sakai is the main character of the story and is all around a pretty relatable character and is the main thread between all the stories.

I wouldn't say this book is for everyone but if it even sounds remotely interesting I'd recommend reading a story or two from it. They're usually about 16 pages and are a pretty good gage if you'd enjoy the series.

Essentially Black Mirror but for care workers.

A goofy, but also thought-provoking, quick read of short stories.

In this esoteric and highly entertaining manga collection, Shintaro Kago constructs various short stories following Yukie, an elderly care aide, who assists a wide variety of senior citizens, including an elderly superhero, a woman who has the power to disappear you when she forgets you, and a woman who wants nothing more than to win an assisted living home lottery through near-guerilla warfare.

Inside are also multiplying clients, cursed clients, and clients who want nothing more than to be wrinkle-less. Each short story is trippy, hilarious, and just so, so good. The art style is incredible and akin to Junji Ito, and Yukie's high stakes--great care in exchange for a great rating--make this collection simultaneously stressful and humorous.

A super weird look at elder care through the eyes of a bizarre manga artist. Absolutely brilliant comment on aging. I laughed out loud and am sure to have nightmares.

So grotesque and surreal, yet twisted in the best ways and an excellent choice for anyone who appreciates dark humor.

Never thought a manga would remind me of Winsor McCay’s work.
