I feel Io would have loved it, reading it after Savages.
I think it is more a fan stuff than an prequel, enjoyable though

I liked the original novel, so I figured I’d give the prequel a try. Winslow uses his same unique style when writing this novel but I didn't like this nearly as much as Savages and I think it had to do with the plot. I already know these characters (i.e. who they become), that I don’t really think I was that interested in a history lesson into their past.

Started Savages and just when it started to get interesting, I moved to this one (prequel but reputedly not as good as Savages).

I feel like I really know the characters now, so that will be helpful moving forward but the family history stories were just boring for the most part. I’m sure they were meant to tie together with some “ah ha” moments but for me, they were just “Ho hum” moments.

Winslow’s writing style feels a bit more unhinged here but I do enjoy the brief screenplay style. The wordplay was okay and the non-standard paragraph structure often felt a bit too cute. I also liked the super short chapters (often effectively used for emphasis).

With Savages, I didn't feel like the plot was dragging; everything felt relevant to the story. But for The Kings of Cool though, I felt like 85% of the book was filler...and that made me sad.

This prequel was written really well! Don Winslow knows how to write an engaging book that leads to the story we know today as Savages. Amazing book !
