Well this was odd.
I’m sad that the relationship between Miriam and Rachel didn’t work out. I enjoyed reading about their relationship more than Rachel’s eating disorder.

The book was alright, a quick read! I mostly enjoyed the beginning when it was a focus on the eating disorder because it was relatable for me. The mommy issues is very prevalent and I'm glad she started eating with a better mindset but nothing truly memorable. Nice quick read!

Still digesting this one. I love that Melissa Broder’s characters are flawed, and not in an easy, gimmicky way. I also like how she interweaves reality with really surreal, absurdist moments. It explores the trauma of growing up in a lonely household and always seeking your mother’s approval. Also delves into binge eating disorder, bisexuality, body issues, and need for male approval. Also slightly touched on Jewish identity. The explicit scenes get really weird - this isn’t your standard romance novel - so buckle up for those! IMO some are meant to show us more about the main character’s deep seated issues and are less about arousing the reader

The ED aspect of the book definitely made it uncomfortable to read at times as it makes you address your own relationship with food. Good book and easy to whiz through

Rachel has a lot of things to work through that can make her a tough character to like, especially at the start, but I think it is a very honest story about personal growth and undoing generational trauma.
The ending was open and unsatisfying in a very realistic way, the way life doesn’t exactly wrap up neatly.
mommy issues galore !
