Well this was odd.
I’m sad that the relationship between Miriam and Rachel didn’t work out. I enjoyed reading about their relationship more than Rachel’s eating disorder.

What an odd book. But well worth the read. Took me on an emotional rollercoaster,  some of the behaviours were painfully recognisable. Rachel’s story is interesting and the thoughts, dreams and actions made her into a real person, someone who I can envision so realistically

I overall really liked this book! It wasn’t the most well written but I also could not put it down. I loved the story line of Rachel and Miriam.

This was the first audiobook I’ve listened to, and was read by the author. The book is written in the first person, so it was difficult to tell whether the main character’s tone was flat and short, or if that’s how the author reads. The tone did soften somewhat towards the end as the character did too. The minute descriptions of Rachel’s eating disorder were difficult to get through - both sinister and dry at once. If I had been reading a hard copy, I likely would have stopped reading or skipped most of these. At the same time, the visceral descriptions of food and bodies were the strongest and most unique aspects of the writing. The ED descriptions took too long to start the book, but did highlight how all-consumed Rachel is, and once the plot kicks off, the chapters and pace felt very well structured. Themes of hunger and binging alongside suppression and lust, family and religion. The discussion of Israel and Palestine and myth and truth - choosing to believe in a false story that we wish were true - was also thought provoking, given the war in Gaza.
