This was my first book by Broder and I will certainly be reading more. I did have a heads up this would be weird going in which I think helped, but I think the weird was used well and was necessary.
I personally liked the ending, however, I get why others didn't. I like endings where there is some realism about how much people are able/willing to change for each other, but I definitely get that it's frustrating

I think I just don’t like funny books. It remains unclear if my occasional revulsion about the events unfolding in this book originate from genuine objection or from some mix of self loathing, but the fact remains that I just don’t think this book was for me: mothers and daughters (read: mommy issues) graphic (and I mean GRAPHIC and not even yummy sapphic) sexual content, and being Jewish (although the Rabbi character construct and the golem were perhaps the most compelling parts of the book).

I definitely would not have picked up this book if not for a bookclub. I also would not be surprised if this ends up as a banned book in some Floridian county sometime soon.

Fun voice, character seems to swing all over the place real quick. Like every so often the book reminds you that it's only been a week, or a few months, and it always made the story feel more compressed chronologically. It's certainly got a message of self acceptance, so if that's your cup of tea and you're cool with some Jewish vocabulary and a fair bit of lesbian... activity... then full recommend.

I agree with many of the other reviews stating that the first 30ish % was really good then it really started to lose me. I wasn’t very sold on the love story part of things and maybe that was the point, that is was actually lust (or hunger????). I was a bit confused about how the eating disorder was handled. There was one part where Rachel was thinking something along the lines of “should I tell Miriam I used to have an eating disorder?” Which first of all, USED TO is not correct just because she’s been eating what she wants for like 2 weeks. I think we saw a lot of the struggle but none of the resolution with both the eating disorder and with her relationship with her mother.
Also I’m open to a bit of weirdness but please the line about Miriam’s shit traumatized me
