Powerful, haunting thriller in the description was a bit misleading… although a lot of crazy stuff happened and there were some spirits involved it didn’t give haunting.
Moving on to the plot, I think it was good! Like I said a lot was going on and Deena was following every lead. She was not letting up. I think the author did a great job exploring yet another way lower class African Americans are oppressed. Our people are constantly being tricked, mishandled, and misguided on obtaining generational wealth. We try to teach each other, but we have a ways to go in order to catch up and surpass. It’s terrible the lengths folks will go for greed.

This very much reads like exactly what the afterword confirms it is - the author learned about heirs’ property and decided to come up with a plot for a novel that explains the issue. To her credit the book does that well - there are multiple examples of how this shows up and she conveys well how this issue continues to impact especially black and brown communities at a systemic level. But it also felt like the plot could’ve been more engaging if it wasn’t so laser focused on explaining the topic
