As an avid fan of Parenthood and Gilmore Girls (and Lauren Graham's adorableness in general), I really wanted to love this book. I looked forward for months to getting it for Christmas and it was the book I was most excited about reading. I'm sad to say that it didn't live up to my expectations. While Lauren Graham's voice and personality shine through, she does mention quite a few times about the deadline for her book (this one) and the pressure of getting it done on time. This seems to be a bit of a cliche for celebrity memoirs where they discuss their busy schedules and "how on Earth will I ever finish on time?!" and I was a bit surprised to find Lauren following the same cliche because she doesn't strike me as a follower. Besides the looming threat of the deadline being hammered into us (we get it), the writing itself suffers from this as it definitely seems like she rushes the narrative along. I was expecting to get A LOT more on Parenthood and Gilmore Girls, her two biggest shows and loves, but it was very few pages on this material and a lot about the deadline and her early career days before she made it, and some random things that don't make much sense but do kind of fall in line with her personality. I did really want a lot more than I got on Gilmore Girls or Parenthood though, even just more substance instead of commenting on how cute Rory's boyfriends were and how conducive the hours on Parenthood were to writing her book. Also she spends SO much time lamenting single life and how she'd never find anyone that, when she got to talking about Peter Krause, I thought she'd give us a bit more.

Why then did I give this 3 stars? Well, like I said, Lauren's wonderful personality certainly shines through her writing and it is nice to see how alike she and Lorelai are in their wit and outlook on the world. This outlook is nowhere more evident than in her chapter Old Lady Jackson where (don't want to give spoilers so I'll just say this) she laments the loss of a more connected world. This chapter is beautiful and I wish we had gotten THIS quality and level of insight throughout the entirety of the book. While Lauren is a compelling writer and her witty humor spills onto the pages, I do wish that perhaps she had written this book when she wasn't in such a rush so that we should've gotten something of more substance

If you love Gilmore Girls, this book is an absolutely necessity to read. Also, Lauren Graham herself narrates the audible book. HIGHLY recommended.

3 stars for the book, extra 1 for the love I have for Gilmore Girls. Lauren is as funny as Lorelai was, but not sure it translates so well in a book. My fav chapters were the ones where she talked about her growing up as an actress and of course, the ones about filming Gilmore Girls and A year in the life

i’m truly sad that i didn’t love this book. there were parts that were great, but more parts that weren’t. this made it so hard to stick to it and honestly had me thinking about not finishing it.

Wonderful book for all Gilmore Girls fans and Parenthood fans. Lorelei/Lauren’s voice as the reader on the audiobook made it even better. My girls and I loved it.
