Some quite nice twists and red herrings. A fairly cynical ending I thought, there in the last few pages. Poirot, as a character, doesn't seem to be quite the same persona as I enjoyed in the other books. There is something darker and more jaded I think? I think it feels, overall, somehow more "mature" in its views on morality and the machinations that motivate people to crime. There are, perhaps, a few too many pieces in play (is my initial thought upon completion). But I did enjoy it and am curious to watch the film adaptations now.
this was fantastic!! a little different in pacing from some of her other stories and more characters to keep track of than i’m used to, but overall really interesting development. definitely had a shock factor towards the end which i loved! unfortunately it did have a few more outwardly racist lines than she usually has… so not a win there :/ but it’s an agatha christie book and i see why it’s one of her most popular… off to watch the movie!

Agatha Christie never disappoints. This mystery takes readers on a journey to Egypt in the 1930s. A boat full of eccentric characters sails down the Nile, everyone enjoying their Egyptian vacation... or are they. When a recently married, rich, young women is found dead in her cabin everyone on board is a suspect. Luckily Hercule Poirot, Christie’s most famous detective, is on board and ready to solve the case. As with all Christie novels you are left guessing until the very end.
The best part of Agatha Christie novels are the characters, and this book is full of them. It was sometimes hard to keep them all straight. I loved all the descriptions of Egypt and the ruins. You could tell that Christie had visited the places herself. The best and most disturbing part of this book is when Poirot confronts the killer. Christie masterfully shows how disturbing easy it is for one to go from ordinary person to killer. A great read!

My first Agatha Christie novel. I thought this would be a light/fun/entertaining summer beach read. In truth, I had a hard time getting myself to read it because 1) none of the characters were very sympathetic and 2) there were SO MANY characters. I couldn't keep them all straight. When I did sit down to read it, at least, the text reads quickly enough. I'm not sure I'll be jumping to read another Christie novel any time soon tho.

To be fair, both the murderer and the motive were very predictable. The promised death took almost 50% of the book to occur but afterwards the story truly picked up. Poirot, as always, took his time revealing the murderer. While tying up all the loose ends makes for a more enjoyable read, it was a bit frustrating knowing a quicker reveal might have prevented further tragedy. Overall, a very fun experience.
