This was one of the most awful books I have ever read. The first few pages describing the house in detail were utterly boring, and it didn't get better from there. Not only did I not like this book at all, but I was also forced to fight myself through one dull page after another and then analyse the many symbols in the book. At some point I just wanted to slap Effi across the face for being such a whiny bitch.
This book apparently tells a whole story between the lines. Maybe I'm just to stupid to understand it.

I honestly did enjoy this book. I found Fontane's narrative perspective to give us a really solid grasp on who Effi was as a person, and how the events presented were affecting her. However, I felt as though I significantly less minimal comprehension of other characters in the novel. Additionally, I felt as though there was a great deal of tangental dialogue that provided little significance to the plot, and that certain aspects of the work seemed improperly paced. Still genuinely enjoyed reading it, though.
