Parts of this book were all over the place and/or wildly implausible, but I enjoyed it the most of the three Bow Street Runners books.
Nick Gentry's sordid past is inexplicably a non-issue in pretty much every way, but within the confines of the actual book, I enjoyed him as a too-smart-for-his-own-good dirtbag boyfriend type. Lottie is sort of a damsel in distress for much of this story, which wasn't bad (I liked her, and she did have some agency) but makes the book a bit dated. I thought their relationship was sweet, though, and their feeling for each other came across even when they were pretending they just had a pragmatic arrangement.
Loved the parts with Westcliff. Ridiculous end-of-book plotline was ridiculous, but it wasn't entirely out of nowhere, so it didn't bother me. There is some backstory involving child sexual abuse; it's not handled too badly for this type of book in the edition I listened to. This story also features one of the worst sets of parents I've ever read.
